The Garden has mature heritage apple trees which we discovered still grew in the garden in 1989. Then ten years ago, we planted an additional 50 trees including Orange Pippin and Brambley.We are presently in the process of replanting a Walled Field last used in the 19th century adjacent to the Walled Garden, these walls are original historic walls.
In 2018, we had a fantastic apple crop and decided to launch our Original Cider – another tradition of the estate where original cider houses still stand in the garden.We would describe our cider as a true apple cider, medium sweet with a subtle apple-sour note to finish.Currently available for Hotel Guests to enjoy.
The Chef also uses the cider with mussels and in sauces with seafood.We were very privileged to have Chef Gary O’Hanlon use our cider in his cooking demos at the recent ‘A taste of Donegal Food Festival.’
We developed our Strawberry patch initially in response to a Donegal Food Coast initiative, where we held a Strawberry Festival – basically a fun summer day celebration all things Strawberry.
Castle Grove Strawberry Gin was born out of this event and again is a small artisanal batch production that is a must do when you visit.
